Séminaire Charles Baroud

jeudi 8 octobre 2009 11:37

Charles Baroud Laboratoire d’Hydrodynamique (LadHyX) École Polytechnique, Palaiseau The use of droplets as microfluidic reactors hinges on the active control of certain fundamental operations such as droplet formation, transport, division and fusion. I will show how local heating from a focused laser can apply a thermocapillary force of about 100 nN on a liquid interface. This force is sufficient to block the advance of a 100 µm droplet in a microchannel. This heating can be used to produce (...)

Séminaire Jhonny A. Rodrigues

vendredi 9 octobre 2009 13:54

Jhonny A. Rodrigues Surfactant and Colloid Group, Department of Chemistry University of Hull, Hull, United Kingdom Addition of a charged surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulphate) to mixtures of air, water and hydrophobic silica nanoparticles under high shear induces the transitional phase inversion from a water-in-air powder to an air-in-water foam. Electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) reveals the non-spherical shape of both water drops and air bubbles as shown below respectively, in which the (...)
