    Physics of bio-inspired self-assembly

    The atomic level precision of biomolecular assemblies is unmatched in present-day synthetic systems and has long been a source of fascination and often of inspiration across the physical and life sciences. Nature is plentiful of astonishing edifices in which hundreds or thousands of molecular building blocks fit into the final structure with a pinpoint accuracy. The degree of order is all the more remarkable that for many biological systems it occurs spontaneously, as an efficient self-assembly process. However, the nature of the available assembly pathways and the transient states are generally unknown and poorly controlled. The objective of my collaborators and myself is to exploit the experimental and theoretical concepts developed in soft condensed matter physics and nanotechnologies, to unravel and to control the self-assembly of bio-inspired systems. Apart from a basic knowledge on biomolecular assemblies, our research may find applications in gene delivery and nanostructured materials.
